 [artist unknown], SEX IS NO DEFENSE, (TRUE CRIME CASES 1950-Jan) - Five years later the same publisher tightly excerpted and flipped this art for the cover of their SPECIAL DETECTIVE 1955-Feb ("Her craving for money drove her lover to murder and the...Hot Seat Blues // Crime And The Lonely Heart--3 actual case histories uncover a ruthless murderous racket !").

 [artist unknown], THE CASE OF THE VIOLENT VIRGIN - "So round, so firm, so deadly packed !" - The Ace paperback-double release of this story in Michael Avollone's Ed Noon series. Several years later the art saw use again as the cover of the Badger Books release of Rackets Incorporated by 'A.D. Brent' (John S. Glasby)("Another smash hit by one of to-day's foremost American thriller writers"). Note that this latter story had been originally published as Blood On My Shadow by A.J. Merak and would be published again a decade later as The Organization (and that the story's protagonist, Johnny Merak, would appear in another of handful of books). I've seen the art credited to Rudy Nappi, but nowhere authoratatively.

 [artist unknown], SWAMP HOYDEN - "Men chased her, charmed her, cheated her...but she outfoxed them all--She was no better than she had to be" - What the heck is going on here? It appears that Unibook had a manuscript from Jack Woodford and John B. Thompson called HOYDEN OF THE SWAMPS, and somewhere in the publication process the name SWAMP HOYDEN got substituted on the cover & spine of the publisher's first release of it (with different art) though the original title could still be found in and around the book. The very next year, Unibook did another release of that book, with its identity-complex still in place, but with our art here making it's first appearance. (What was wrong with the art they used the first time?--It was reused a short time later as the covers to both CRACKER GIRL by Harry Whittington and HILL HOYDEN by Lon Williams). Then to add to the confusion, the following year the publisher seems to have wanted to reprint Ann Lawrence's (very similar) 15-odd-year-old book, SHE WANTED MORE, but they instead applied to it the new title HOYDEN OF THE HILLS and put our same art on its cover! ("They said she was no better than she had to be! -- Men teased her, trapped her, tricked her...but she gave them better than she got !"). (Also, don't confuse any of this is with a Delmar Kingsland book that came out two years afterwards, originally entitled MOUNTAIN SINNER, now titled HOYDEN OF THE MOUNTAINS.)

  [artist unknown], SCHOOL FOR GIRLS - "Sex was a major ....at Mrs.Hawleys! A novel that deals boldly-honestly...with a subject long considered taboo" - While this version of the painting here is its current condition, I feel that it was modified to make it suitable for this 1953 Beacon Books paperback cover for George Kramer's story. Before that it had the man brandishing a gun and appeared on the magazine SMASH DETECTIVE-CRIME CASES 1950-Nov ("Crime Of The Month! Wayward Wife And Her Wicked Lover! // A Daring Expose! Sex For Suckers !"), and then that image was the one re-used on a *later* magazine, BEST TRUE FACT DETECTIVE 1954-Mar ("There was a devil in her past...and he would never let her go! Read I Dare You To Leave Me!").

So, the artist here painted this from the chosen photo and the painting was used as the cover of this magazine. There would be a re-paint of this canvas, reformulating it to be the cover of the Beacon Books of CONVENTION GIRL by Rick Lucas. Now then, that same year, a magazine, TRUE DETECTIVE CASES FROM POLICE FILES 1954-Aug, used that original model-photograph as their cover, and *it* was later re-used as the cover of DETECTIVE CASES 1956-Oct.

Note that the same year this book was published, a magazine, TRUE DETECTIVE CASES FROM POLICE FILES 1954-Aug, used as their cover the model-photograph that this painting was obviously painted from (the photo itself was re-used on DETECTIVE CASES 1956-Oct). With all that said, notice that this painting is incredibly similar to that used for the cover of the earlier WOMEN IN CRIME 1952-Nov (also displayed here)(perhaps a slightly different pose from the same photoshoot). I've seen George Gross's name associated with this, but I'd need to see tangible confirmation to buy that.

The canvas's only note is "NS536", seeming to indicate that the art was intended to be used on the cover of #536 in the Nitime Swapbooks (Greenleaf) imprint, but #528 was the last book in that 'line', so this remains unidentified.

The problem there is that that series of books, on that imprint, *ends* with AB1680. While it is possible that a number of projects may have been jettisoned during some change of direction at that time, there would have certainly been utilization of paid-for art in the years that followed. It was featured in SHAMELESS ART. I think it's time to consider it someone's portfolio piece. AI guessed most likely - if not yet established, Darrell Millsap and established Robert Maguire.
